LONDON - Jacob Rothschild, a prominent figure in finance and philanthropy, passed away at the age of 87, according to an announcement by his family on Monday.

Rothschild's journey began within the esteemed Rothschild banking dynasty, where he joined NM Rothschild & Sons in 1963. Later, he ventured into establishing his own enterprises and charitable ventures. His family honored his memory with a heartfelt tribute.

Our beloved father, Jacob, touched countless lives as a distinguished financier, an advocate for the arts and culture, a dedicated public servant, and a fervent supporter of charitable endeavors in Israel and Jewish heritage. He was also a staunch environmentalist and cherished friend, father, and grandfather," his family fondly recalled.

The Rothschild family, with an estimated fortune of approximately 825 million pounds ($1 billion), as per last year's Sunday Times Rich List, has been known for its philanthropic contributions to Jewish causes, education, and the arts.

Political and cultural figures, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, expressed their respects for Jacob Rothschild. Blair hailed him as a "towering figure in Britain's Jewish community" and praised his efforts in promoting peace in the Middle East.

Jacob Rothschild, hailing from Berkshire, just west of London, received his education at the prestigious Eton College. He further pursued his academic journey by studying history at Christ Church College, Oxford University.

Following his departure from the Rothschild bank, Jacob Rothschild assumed leadership of Rothschild Investment Trust, now known as RIT Capital Partners.

He held the position of chairman at this esteemed firm, one of the premier investment trusts listed on the London Stock Exchange, until 2019.

Additionally, he played a pivotal role in establishing the then J Rothschild Assurance Group, which has since evolved into St James's Place, alongside Mark Weinberg in 1980.

Moreover, he served as deputy chairman at what was formerly known as BSkyB Television, among other notable roles.

In the realm of culture, Jacob Rothschild made significant contributions, serving as chairman of the board of trustees at London's esteemed National Gallery and chair of the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Rothschild Foundation, responsible for overseeing the family's historic residence, Waddesdon Manor, announced that Jacob Rothschild's daughter, Hannah, would succeed him as its chair.

Jacob Rothschild shared over 50 years of marriage with Serena, who passed away in 2019. Together, they raised four children - Hannah, Beth, Emily, and Nat - and were blessed with many grandchildren.
